Gem Water: Beginner Dos and Don'ts

There has been a surge in crystal waters recently with the normalization of crystal healing, essential oils, and the general metaphysical realm. We wanted to go over some easily overlooked points when you are either making your own gem water or buying one of those fancy bottles with crystals in them already.

Types of gem infusions

Quartz Tube Method

This one has a little longer prep time but is worth it for those crystals you can’t place in water(which is a lot of the fun ones!). Find yourself a quartz test tube. These are available on science websites and etsy. Make sure it’s actually quartz, not just glass! Many are made with quartz that has been crushed and reformed, this is totally fine.

So now you’ve got your test tube, your decanter of water and crystals to infuse. Simply place the crystals inside the test tube and place the test tube into the water. No water should get inside of the test tube, just deep enough to cover it about half way. Allow to infuse 2-8 hours and you can keep adding water to have a steady supply.

Crystal Grids

Believe it or not, your crystals don’t have to touch water to infuse it. This method allows for the freedom to use any crystal of any size. Place your glass of water or decanter on an open table space. These are very person but we’ll give you a good starting point:

Beginning from your container place 2 or more quartz points face towards your water. Behind those, start arranging your infusing crystals(malachite, citrine, etc) forming a grid(or whatever design you connect with) and essentially create a connecting force from your crystal to water. Allow to sit in grid for 2-8 hours. These type of infusions also can be awesome if you have a mantra or focus goal when infusing.

Charging Plates

If you can get your hands on a great slab or slice of gemstone, you can infuse your glass of water as you’re drinking it. This method is nice because they can double as coasters. For full affect, allow to infuse ontop of slice fo 2-8 hours.

Placing your crystal directly in water(least favorite method)

The “simplest” method, but riskiest unless you know your stones are clean and free of chemicals often used in the final stone polish steps.

Simply drop your crystals into your water and allow to chill for 2-4 hours. It is recommended to remove, cleanse and dry them once a week before returning them to water if using a refillable container(water jug, decanter, etc).

Safe crystals to USe directly in water:

Safe: Clear Quartz, Rose Quartz, Smoky Quartz, Amethyst, Citrine(most quartz based stones), Tiger’s Eye, Jaspers,

Not safe: Calcites, Selenite, Malachite, Azurite, Lapis, Pyrite, most Agates, Fluorite, Labradorite, Tourmalines, Hematite, Onyx

Many of these note safe stones will release toxins when in water, many will dissolve. You don’t want to drink literal stone water. A safe rule of thumb to follow is by hardness: Anything 6 or above on the Mohs scale should be good to go in water. Stones closer to 6 may be more porous and do your reading before making a decision to toss it in. Not only could you destroy your stone but you could get really sick.

It’s also important to scrub your water-safe stones well with a small, soft brush and soap. If possible, leave them soaking in a bowl of water for a few minutes before rinsing again.

*if you aren’t sure if a crystal can be placed directly in water, use one of the hands off methods*

Evaporation Method

Place water in pan on stove, suspend your crystal above the pan and allow water to boil, evaporate and drip back into the pan for about 30 minutes. you can use cheesecloth, a colander, or chopsticks to suspend but make sure your material won’t melt or affect your water.

Uses

Okay so now you’ve got your crystal water, it’s decanted and ready for use.

Drink up!

There’s plenty of options(including the quartz tube method) to add stones to your everyday drinks. It’s also a fun experiment with different stones to see how you body reacts.

Skin/Body Care

  • Use your gem water as a base for a mister.

8 oz gem water(rose quartz is great) + 20-40 drops rose geranium essential oil + 1-2 tbs witch hazel shake well.

Spritz on face and body for a love filled, hormone balancing toner.

  • Make a whole gallon of gem water and add it your next bath.

Cleansing(not hygiene related)

  • Use your gem water to cleanse other crystals or your home. This can be done by adding our choice of crystal water to a bucket of soap and more water. Can also be made into a mister as stated above but antiseptic essential oils like lemon, lime or orange. Wash your windows, doorframes, walls, etc. We recommend protective gem water with like stone Black Onyx.

  • Use gem water as a base for a mister above and add Lavender & Clary Sage essential oils for a house cleansing spray. Walk around spritzing each room and asking only love & light to stay.

  • Use your gem water instead of tap/distilled in your diffuser

  • Infuse oils(via non-direct infusing) for massage, soap, etc.
